ABOUT US: There is nothing quite like an unexpected career change at age 50 to sharpen one’s focus on a new business. I decided to concentrate on developing the best repair and full-service facility possible for antique cars, trucks, tractors, and all other interesting old mechanisms. The seed for the idea was planted in 1989 when I bought a 1929 DeSoto in deplorable condition. I patched it up enough to drive it home: pouring burnt oil smoke into the cockpit as it staggered along on about 4 ½ out of 6 cylinders with my wife, Arlene, holding the doors closed while the rotted body wood shifted. We lurched to a halt in the back yard after the 1-mile trip home, using one hydraulic brake I had repaired in the right front wheel. Won the bet that I could drive it home after its being dead since 1950. But when the fumes cleared there was nowhere to turn for a shop with tools to pull the tapered rear hubs & brake drums, or to provide repair parts for the vacuum tank, or to help pull the engine, or … the list was endless and the answers were few. Came the dawn: old cars needed a hospital. Not another high-end restoration facility, but a top-quality, blue-collar, here’s-where-you-go-to-get-her-in-shape place. The seed was planted, but required a corporate shake-up 12 years later for germination. Arlene handles all the billing, inventory, tax and paper work and I run the shop.
